El principio activo en el trabajo de Leticia Vieyra puede ser formulado de manera sencilla: ella redime fragmentos de lo marginal encontrando un sentido de belleza ahí. Estos fragmentos provienen usualmente de la naturaleza y usualmente “están saliendo”, por así decirlo. Por marginal intento referirme al hecho de que ella se acerca a la naturaleza en lo más frangible, en el límite donde la naturaleza ha dejado la forma, antes de que se desintegre en polvo.
Ella interviene en el proceso de degradación, rescatando o una celosía, o una filigrana, o una cáscara, o una línea, o una textura, o un color, y ensamblándolos y mezclándolos, señala, no sólo la belleza que la naturaleza presenta, sino también una belleza que es posible cuando la mente y la naturaleza conspiran juntas -la mente es un producto de la naturaleza después de todo- imaginando nuevos objetos híbridos.
Central en su repertorio es el uso de un papel especial, fabricado en el pueblo del amate, en su nativo México, hecho por ella y artesanos locales. Frecuentemente quemando los bordes del papel, ella hace eco, siguiendo un delicado plan, de formas a las que enfáticamente nos referimos como orgánicas.
The first active principle in Leticia Vieyra´s work can be simply stated: she redeems fragments from the margins and a sense of beauty there. These fragments are usually from nature and are usually on the way out, so to speak. By “the margins” I mean to refer to the fact that she is drawn to nature at its most febrile or frangible, at the dessicated edge, when moisture has left the form and before there´s a break-up into dust.
She intervenes in the process of dissolution and rescues a lattice, or a filigree, or a husk, or a line, or a texture, or a colour, and through assembly and remixing she points not only to beauty as nature states it, but also to a beauty possible when mind parallels nature and conspires whit nature -for mind after all is a product of nature- to imagine new and hybrid objects.
Central to her repertoire is the use of specially made papers crafted is the village of Amate in her native Mexico and made by her and local craftspeople. Frequently singeing the edges of the paper she echoes, by a delicate contrivance, the delineations of shape and form that we emphatically refer to as organic.
