For this concert The Gavin Bryars Ensemble performs a selection of his 1992 collaboration with Juan Muñoz. A sequence of five-minute long texts with music, A Man in a Room, Gambling is concerned with the strategies employed in card games. The work was conceived in the character of a late night radio broadcast; "Juan imagined a listener driving along a motorway at night being bemused by this fleeting and perhaps enigmatic curiosity, in fact precisely the way in which most listeners encounter the Shipping Forecast."
Greg Sandow (Wall Street Journal) wrote that "The music sounds both spare and lush, emotional and uninvolved, expressionless and melancholy."
